With the intention of hosting a race in the honor of a selfless Anguillian, Mr. John Thomas aka John T., who gave much of his time and finances to the sport in the early years, the Anguilla Cycling Association (ACA) was formed by a group of avid cyclists who would have benefited from Mr. Thomas’ graciousness which assisted them to excel in the sport. Therefore, in 1997 the association was formed with Mr. Evan Gumbs as President and Mr. Carl Avery Thomas as Vice President. This gave birth to the John T. Memorial Cycling Race which started back in 1998 and is now held annually.

Some of Anguilla’s top cyclists in the sport in the early stages were Jerry “Mopstick” Vanheynigen, Phillip “Chinee” Richardson (deceased), Evan Gumbs, Avery Thomas to name a few. This persons have helped to build the sport and made cycling one of the favourite sports on the island.

Over the years, cycling has evolved and in an effort to keep up with the progressing sport, the Anguilla Cycling Association has embarked on a few initiatives to have the Anguilla recognized in the cycling world. One of these initiatives was having the association, registered as an affiliated member of the International Cycling Union (UCI), the world governing body for the sport in 2017. Being an affiliated member of UCI offers the opportunity to have Anguillian cyclists participate in a number of international races, which was not possible prior to 2017.

The Anguilla Cycling Association is a non-profit organization which is dedicated to providing activities to promote and develop the sport of cycling; competitive and recreational. The ACA’s aim is to provide cycling education, promote stronger team spirit and a more united community for members, cyclists and the Anguillian community at large.

The Anguilla Cycling Association presently has 4 clubs and approximately 35 registered cyclists with majority being between the age of 12-20 and contributes greatly to the development of youth.
